“Electrophysiology in early drug discovery: from subcellular compartment studies to disease model” seminar

Katherina Orellana, Head of Business Development Europe, is pleased to introduce  a seminar featuring Federica Gasparri ,  Scientist in our Electrophysiology Unit, where she will investigate membrane proteins in mitochondria and lysosomes.

Abstract for the talk:

This seminar will explore advanced electrophysiological techniques to investigate membrane proteins in mitochondria and lysosomes, focusing on native ion channels at the single-organelle level. 

At Axxam, we have developed purified organellar preparations for high-throughput screening (HTS), leveraging automated patch-clamp to assess their functional properties. Special attention will be given to lysosomal physiology in iPSC-derived dopaminergic neurons, offering insights into neurodegenerative disease mechanisms and potential therapeutic targets.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Federica Gasparri is a scientist in the Electrophysiology Unit at Axxam in Italy.

She holds a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Copenhagen. During her PhD, Dr. Gasparri was part of the Center for Biopharmaceuticals, a center of excellence where biology and chemistry intersected to pursue pioneering projects. This experience not only deepened her expertise in ion channels biology and biophysics but also expanded her knowledge in the field of chemical biology.

After completing a two-year Post-Doc at the University of Milan, she joined Axxam in 2020. Since then, she has expanded her expertise in electrophysiology, mastering a wide range of techniques, from manual to automated patch-clamp, as well as working with pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived neurons and conducting single-organelle experiments. Additionally, she has led a high-throughput screening campaign and managed an interdisciplinary drug discovery program.
