How can electrophysiology help investigate ion channels beyond the plasma membrane?
At the Nanion User Meeting 2026, Axxam will join the electrophysiology community to exchange insights on ion channel research, advanced technologies and their applications in drug discovery.
Representing Axxam at the meeting will be Manuel Paina, Supervisor, Organellar Electrophysiology, bringing our experience in the functional characterization of ion channels located within intracellular organelles.
About the Nanion User Meeting
The Nanion User Meeting brings together scientists working across electrophysiology, ion channel research, membrane transport and drug discovery.
The scientific program provides a forum for researchers from academia and industry to share applications, experimental approaches and technological developments. Previous editions have covered areas ranging from automated patch clamp and high-throughput electrophysiology to membrane transporters, iPSC-derived models and organellar electrophysiology.
Alongside scientific presentations, the meeting creates opportunities for technology demonstrations, posters and discussions within the electrophysiology community.
Going beyond conventional electrophysiology
Ion channels are found not only at the plasma membrane but also within intracellular compartments, where they contribute to essential cellular processes.
Studying these targets presents specific technical challenges. Organellar electrophysiology provides direct access to ion channel activity within intracellular membranes, enabling functional investigation of targets that can be difficult to characterize using conventional approaches.
At Axxam, this expertise supports the study of organellar ion channels, including lysosomal targets, for drug discovery applications.
Organellar electrophysiology at Axxam
Axxam combines specialized electrophysiology expertise with advanced cellular models and assay development capabilities to investigate challenging ion channel targets.
Our organellar electrophysiology capabilities support:
- Target characterization and validation
- Assay development
- Compound testing and pharmacological profiling
- Ion channel modulator characterization
- Drug discovery programs focused on intracellular targets
Our experience includes TMEM175, a lysosomal ion channel of growing interest in neurodegeneration research.
